SED-553:
Reading & Literacy Strategies for Middle & Secondary Schools
SED-553 is a course geared towards implementing literacy-based instruction in all content areas. In addition to learning and evaluating strategies, students will also have the opportunity to implement these methods in a 7-12 classroom during their practicum/field experience hours. Here are some additional helpful details and answers to those frequently asked questions.

Practicum
You will be completing 30 hours of practicum/field experience hours during this course (10 hours each in three different grade 7-12 classrooms). You will find the practicum placement and observation log forms in the practicum manual (available in the Student Success Center) and will submit these to me in the final week’s Benchmark assignment. The syllabus states that you will be starting the practicum during week 3, but you can start immediately, especially as summer vacation is here. For some alternative practicum locations, please check out this document; if you do need to request an alternative placement, please be sure to fill out the top half of this document and send it to me via the Individual Forum for approval. If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding your practicum, please be sure to let me know via the Individual Forum in Loud Cloud.
Writing Assingments
If you haven’t noticed yet, this course has some writing assignments. Don’t stress! You’ll find lots of details about APA-style in the Resources > Student Success Center, as well as in the General Resources tab above. Also, don’t forget that I’m an English teacher at heart and am at your disposal!
TaskStream
Hopefully you are familiar with this by now. But if you’re not, TaskStream is an e-Portfolio account that showcases your learning in each Education course. I will post more details about this at the beginning of Week 2 as you will not submit an assignment via TaskStream until Module 8. If you are dying to find out more information right now, you may visit the General Resources > TaskStream tab above, or in Loud Cloud via the Resources> Student Success Center > Colleges > College of Education > TaskStream to get a head start.
Rubrics
You will find the rubrics for each assignment in the appropriate Loud Cloud assignment link. Be sure to look at the rubric before completing an assignment, as it provides details about how to go above and beyond the basic requirements of the assignment directions in the Syllabus.
Participation
Every week there are two required discussion questions. For a quality post, be sure to be detailed, use examples, and cite sources (if used). As far as responses to your classmates, be sure to maintain a respectful tone and try to give a more detailed response than, “Good post,” or “I agree.” See if you can expand on your classmate’s ideas, offer suggestions, raise a question, or provide examples. CLC (Collaborative Learning Community)
We have two CLC group assignments: one is due at the end of Module 4, and the second will be due at the end of Module 7. I will post an announcement at the beginning of Module 2 with your groups. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with your peers! For additional details about CLCs and how to work towards success, please visit the General Resources > CLCs That Work tab above.
Turnitin
Please be sure to turn all writing assignments over 500 words into the appropriate Turnitin dropbox, per GCU policy.
Lesson Plans
You will be asked to create lesson plans in several course assignments. You may use the templates in the General Resources > Lesson Plans, or you may use another template that you feel comfortable with (as long as it has the required components of a lesson plan).
