SEC-345:
Content Area Literacy for Middle & Secondary Teachers
SEC-345 is a course geared towards implementing literacy-based instruction in all content areas. In addition to learning and evaluating strategies, students will also have the opportunity to implement these methods in a 6-12 classroom during their practicum/field experience hours. Here are some additional helpful details and answers to those frequently asked questions.
Practicum
You will be completing 15 hours of practicum/field experience hours during this course (grade 6-12 classrooms). For answers to all of your questions regarding the practicum (forms, submission, etc.), please utilize the resources in the Practicum/Field Experience section of the COE: https://www.gcumedia.com/lms-resources/student-success-center/v3.1/#/colleges/CoE.
Assignments
This course has some writing assignments, journals regarding practicum, and unit/lesson planning. Don’t stress! You’ll find lots of details about APA-style in the Resources > Student Success Center, as well as in the General Resources tab above; we'll also be discussing lots of strategies for creating lesson plans, and I do have some resources posted above (via the General Resources). Also, don’t forget that I’m an English teacher at heart and am at your disposal! For more details about each assignment, please visit this page.
Rubrics
You will find the rubrics for each assignment in the appropriate Loud Cloud assignment link. Be sure to look at the rubric before completing an assignment, as it provides details about how to go above and beyond the basic requirements of the assignment directions in the Syllabus.
Participation
- Two DQ Questions – Please be sure to post your original response to DQ1 by day 3, and your response to DQ2 by day 5. As a 300-level course, your response should be 150+ words and incorporate research (when applicable), examples, and details.
- Participation – In addition, please take the time to respond to other posts by classmates and me. You need two substantive posts (75+ words) on 3 separate days, per GCU policy (total of six responses to peers/instructor + 2 responses to DQs = 8 total per week); remember that substantial posts offer reflection, provide alternative viewpoints, raise questions, integrate research, and seek to move the dialogue forward. You will also find additional questions posted each week; these are optional, but I have tried to select topics that expand on the week’s objectives and your response to these questions will earn you credit towards participation. Feel free to respond to those each week!
