SED-485 Assignment-Specific Questions
Here are some common concerns that students encounter when completing assignments. As a reminder, please refer to rubrics before beginning your assignment, as all assignments are graded using those. And if I haven’t addressed your question here, please send me a message using the Questions for Instructor Forum or Individual Forum. Thanks!
General Writing Reminders
1. Please be sure to use the 6th edition of APA style guidelines.
2. Remember that strong writing includes an introduction, transition words, and a conclusion.
3. Use outside research. This is a 400-level course; as such, it is a best practice to integrate outside research in order to lend credibility to your ideas and support your opinions. However, remember to use academic sites; things like Wikipedia, ask.com, or random blogs are great for personal use but are not acceptable for academic purposes.

Module 1: Creation of a Web
It's time to illustrate your understanding of and suggestions for meaningful social studies instruction. Your web must include activities that address each phase of the learning cycle and include the following categories: SS & students, SS knowledge, meaningful learning; feel free to add additional categories that you deem important. Use arrows, color, categories, and whatever else you choose to organize your ideas.
You can create this with a word document, PowerPoint, or even an free online program like http://piktochart.com, http://www.easel.ly/, or https://mural.ly/.

Module 3: Instructional Planning in the Social Studies Classroom
It's time to design a lesson using a technological tool! After reviewing the Module 3 readings, to do a Google search of some already created WebQuests, Prezis, websites, etc. If you choose to design a WebQuest, you will notice that all WebQuests have the following in common: Introduction, Task, Process, Resources, Evaluation, and Conclusion. I also found the following site to be quite informative: http://njcie.net/pdf/resources/webquests.pdf; you can create a WebQuest for free at http://www.createwebquest.com/, a Prezi at https_://prezi.com/, a free _website at http://www.weebly.com/ (this is the site I use...I'm addicted!), or any other tech tool that you wish (Glogster, Easel.ly, Piktochart, and Mural.ly are just a few others...).
Your submission should address the questions from the assignment directions, include content within the technological tool, and incorporate student activities that address each question.

Module 4: CLC: Cultural Mosaic
Your first team assignment!! Each member should choose a culture to research (with a focus on education within that culture), find a minimum of four academic sources, and discuss how to accommodate that culture into the classroom. Each individual team member will summarize their findings in a 750-1,000 word essay.
As a group, create a chart to compare each of the cultures side-by-side.
Combine all of the following into one document: each of the individual essays and the chart; there should be a synthesis of individual components so that the final document connects individual ideas, includes implications for teachers and SS instruction, and smoothly transitions from one idea to the next.
ONE member will submit the final project to the appropriate assignment submission dropbox.

Module 5: Social Studies Lesson Plan
- You need to create an original social studies lesson plan that addresses multiple intelligences, authentic literature, Bloom's Taxonomy, Webb's DOK, assessment of objective (three summative and one formative = four total), and a rubric. You will find lesson plan templates in the General Resources tab above.
- Then...teach that lesson to students!
- Finally, you will reflect on your lesson and the content in a 250-500 word reflection that cites at least four educational journals/academic websites. Please be sure to use APA style for your citations and references, and don't forget to take advantage of the GCU eLibrary.
- Submit both your written reflection essay and your created lesson plan, assessments, and rubric in ONE document.
Module 6: Inquiry Skills
After listing and describing five inquiry skills, create an activity that incorporates each strategy. Then, design a unit of study built around these skills and strategies. Be sure to explain how you would teach each activity, how you would make them meaningful for students (ie. real-world applicable), and how you would assess each activity (include all four types of assessments). Click here for a previous student sample.
Module 7: CLC: Social Studies Book List
Create an annotate book list of at least 25 books, describing how and why the book can be a resource for the social studies classroom. Then, create a lesson plan for one of those books in order to teach literacy. Again, lesson plan templates can be found in the General Resources tab above. ONE member of your team will submit the final assignment to the assignment dropbox.
